‘Israeli Planning, Architecture and Development in Africa’ digital archive

This project studies Israel’s past involvement in architecture and planning in Africa, in the context of a wider theoretical conceptualization of the role of architecture and planning in the shaping of foreign policy. The objectives of this project are to analyze the historical, political and institutional setup underlying Israeli involvement in architecture and planning in Africa and to document the scope of this phenomenon across policy makers, professionals and institutions.

This digital archive focuses on the visual documentation of the production of architecture, planning and development in Africa, and to the ways in which such activities are interlinked to wider networks such as colonial knowledge, cultural production and the export of military knowledge. The contribution of the archive is twofold in that it is the rst comprehensive study of Israeli involvement in planning and architecture in Africa and in that it links this policy to the working of Israeli institutions and professionals.

The digital archive is part of a research project supported by: Israel Science Foundation GIF - German - Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Exhibited in “Regarding Africa” at Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel. Presented at the “Through Local Eyes” conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, TU Berlin, Truman Research Institute, Tel Aviv University and more.
